To use rawhide, simply soak it in water until it's soft and pliable. Then, cut, form, or strip it into any shape or length you desire. Rawhide will hold its shape as it dries, though it will shrink a bit, so plan accordingly! It's incredibly strong and durable—wrap a wet piece around a soda can, and as it dries, it can crush the can if there's not enough room. So, hatbands might be a bit tricky, haha.
