Special Purchase Veg Tan Sides - D Grade
2-3 oz. D grade. Average size 27-30 sq ft. Sold by the sq ft. We will cut.
Not be outdone by Rusty’s recent leather buying adventures, Kevin has been on an adventure of his own! Seeing a desperate need for some pretty low grade, lightweight veg leather, Kevin mounted his trusty steed (aka Toyota Camry) and headed for a secret place, so dangerous he daren’t share it’s location with nary a soul, for only Kevin has the wits about him to get the goods and get out safely!
What I do know is that deep within the caverns of the Merrimack, is a hidden tunnel that defies space and time. I’ve heard stories round the leather table that this mysterious place is the closest thing to the land of the lost that Kevin ever did see...and it is there that he happened upon a herd of the biggest, meanest, scratchiest cow-a-sauruses he’s ever laid eyes on; just in time to witness the ancient molting ritual, in which they de-hair themselves and shed off perfectly tanned sides...it really is a sight to behold, Kevin assures us.
Fortunately for you, and the cow-a-sauruses, Kevin is a problem solver! Knowing the last thing those colossal beasts needed was to be trampling on and tripping over their old skins, Kevin generously offered to haul them away! This made life easier for those big ol’ bovines, and filled the need SLC had for some low grade tooling leather!
Now, keep in mind, those cow-asauruses are free-range critters...running around in a world where the biting bugs are as big as (or even bigger than) the dumb dogs that run around Springfield Leather! So you’re gonna see a fair bit of insect damage, as well as some scratches they’ve picked up trying to outrun the ginormous skeeters! There may be some other surface issues, on some sides more than others.
Another thing to keep in mind is that these are not little animals... some of the SIDES Kevin brought back are as big as 37 square feet, that’s flat out huge!!!
Now this is a low grade assortment of 2-3 oz. veg tanned sides, some will be better than others, none are perfect, but all would make great linings and interiors for sure! And for this price, you can afford to be as creative as you want to be!!! Order what you want, we’re happy to cut it for you!

Good quality for the price

Overall very happy with what I received. You can see the piece here: https://i.imgur.com/ziCRKPo.jpg?1. I ordered 4 feet as a starting point in my new found hobby. I figured worst case scenario I'd tool a bit on it and cut it up for strips to use later. Piece came without holes or scarring. It did have the clamp marks from the leathering processes, but I can't complain at all about that. For the price, 5/5 for me!

Great price, worked for me, thank you will be back.

I just got a side of this in today, and it's a great bargain. I'm using it for shoe bodies and stitch down based. It's exactly what I hoped for, and I'll be ordering more. It's a good weight for wallet backs, or anything requiring a thinner leather that doesn't stretch. It's thick enough for wet stamping or lasering but probably not for carving. I'm impressed! I hesitated to write the review lest they sell out before I can order more, but that would be unethical, so I'm forced to gamble. Get yours today! It's a great deal on hard to find material.

I was pleasantly surprised. I expected more issues with D grade but 95% of the leather was clean

I bought a big piece of this leather and am very happy with it. My piece feels closer to a 3 oz and only had a pinprick size hole in it which I can work around. Yes it did have the clamp marks, no biggie.
Better than expected

After the last purchase of b grade leather, I really wasn't expecting much from this order. But wow was ever surprised! Sure a few blemishes here and there, but very few, and well worth what I paid. The only complaint I have about this order is I wish I would have bought more. Will definitely be back for more of this if available.
My Cow-a-saurus Has Arrived!

Received my cowasaurus hide in good time. Opened it up to great excitement and was pleasantly greeted by that wonderful smell of fine veg-tanned leather. I unrolled the entire side onto the table and was surprised at just how good it was. "D-Grade"??? Excellent condition for a D-grade. Only a few holes and nothing I cannot work around in making all kinds of goods from this wonderful hide!

I bought a ton of this because why not. Sometimes you have to take risks. It's definitely D grade, but that doesn't mean it is bad in any way. My pieces didn't have any holes, but there are faint marks all throughout. The edges are pretty beat up with some clamp marks and discoloration, but at least 90% of the leather is perfect for what I need it for. Edges get cut off anyway. I actually bought this to do some traditional bookbinding which is usually done with goatskin. This is the perfect weight (and WAY cheaper) and I plan on dying my books to look distressed so the markings are not an issue at all, and probably won't show when I'm done.
Hardly any defects!

Very nice for D grade! I'll be buying again!
I never buy enough of Springfield's "special purchase" leather.

I really need to stop buying Springfield leather's "special purchase" leathers one at a time. They always show up nicer that I expect. I bought this "D Grade" side to test some patterns, but now... Yes it has spots and a few holes. but for the small things I make I can work around them and have a lot of very nice leather for making "test" pieces. Not quite as nice as the special purchase European belt bends that I grabbed a few last time, but if you need nice leather for testing or small goods this is it. Uniform thickness too and just over 1 mm on a 2-3 oz. everywhere I checked, also with a nice flesh side. I only regret not buying more just like with the bends I should have gotten more. If I find the budget before they run out I'll get some more, and as always order was fulfilled and arrived at my door within a week. Service on top of value keeps me coming back. Have a great day! and keep up the great work.
TWO detailed backpacks! Very satisfied!

This was a great value! I was able to produce 2 backpacks out of this! My girls love them! Barely anything wrong with it! A few skinny spots and clamp marks but I was able to work around those! Highly recommend and will purchase again!
A little elbow grease went a long way

The price on this stuff is so low, so when the hide showed up all dried out and cardboard-y, I wasn't surprised. I decided to experiment a little, so I rubbed the grain side with olive oil, and then rubbed some saddle soap into the flesh side. I rolled it up and put it away for a few weeks. The other day I unrolled it and WOW it's now soft and pliable and has lots of character. Still, it's D-grade leather and not something I need a lifetime supply of, but it's been fun to play with.
Only wish I had gotten more!

If this is what SLC calls D grade, then I won’t be buying leather anywhere else from now on. I wish I ordered more, because it’s incredibly clean and much more consistent compared to the last side I got from another vendor that wasn’t their cheapest option either. The color on the piece I got is very pale, which is what I hoped for because it’s perfect for dyeing brighter colors when making cased leather flowers. The defects are minimal and mostly near the edges.
Works great for my wallet interiors but remember it is D grade

For being D grade it's what you expect. The first time I purchased it was great, just a few scars on the edges along with the clamp marks so not much was in bad shape. I doubled my order this time and was disappointed because of how many and where the scratches and scars were place but again it's d grade so it's what's expected.
Worth every penny.

Love this leather. The "D" grade variations come to life with various shades of brown dye. A little antique for the "imperfections" to pick up, and it gives you that nice old look that I love. I will buy it again and so should you.
Can't beat the price

Fir the price can't complain much being D grade bit it's a hit or miss. Ivw ordered this leather 3 separate times and the first time it was ok but you could tell it was D grade, 2nd time was horrible I almost didn't buy it again but this 3rd time it's pretty good almost B grade...so in my opinoin it's hit or miss but for the price you can't complain much
This last order was terrible, but past orders have been great
Ashlie - | 12/26/2022 1:29 pm
I have bought this several times in the past and it was always great. Very useable, minimal flaws. This time It came in two separate pieces, one of which has a giant hole cut in the very center of it. The other piece has two very large scars right in the middle and a large brand on one side. Around the scars are multiple clamp marks and discolorations. Very disappointed, especially considering how much I had to pay for it to be shipped. I could have gotten as much useable grade B leather for the same price I paid for this. I understand that its grade D, but I usually at least get mostly usable leather when I order this.
Great bargain for lightweight vegtan.
Eric - | 2/21/2023 1:05 pm
Great for the money. I bought this on two occasions. The first time, the half side I bought was near pristine with a perfectly clean surface. The second order had much more scarring. This is not a problem for me, since I have use for the distressed look. However, if you need a large, mostly clear piece, you might be better off selecting in person. Overall, for a large piece of lightweight vegtan, you will be hard pressed to find a better deal. This stuff is priced at about a third of what it costs for other 2-3oz. vegtan. I'll be picking up some more.
